April 2013: Log shopping!!

hello folks
yesterday I had a break from the workshop and visited one of my local log yards.
This yard deals mainly with forest management removing dead or problem tree's and thinning to keep the woodland in good health.
The majority of this timber is destined for firewood, a small amount will get planked for timber frames etc
I was there to collect a olive ash crotch and trunk section which I had spotted late last year and had already bought and worked with a half tonne or so

This picture and the next few photos show a tree which had/has what I think to be a type of bee or wasp infestation

The base of an oak butt with what looks like brown oak colouration.

Not sure what had happened to this tree, it looks like maybe it had a hollow at the base which has then had a fire set inside it.

A couple of intresting looking crotch's

I've ear marked this ash log for a future look as the unusual markings shown here under teh bark normally means very intresting figured timber inside.

The ash crotch and butt section- both were around 3' long and 2' wide
